La Máquina Advances in the U.S. Open Cup

Santa Ana-based club La Máquina of the United Premier Soccer League defeated the Portland Timbers U23s of the Premier Development League by a score of 2-0 at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon on Wednesday night, thus advancing to the 2nd round of this 2016 U.S. Open Cup.

La Máquina got on the board early, in the sixth minute, and held the Timbers to a shutout until the victors scored in added extra time to finish 2-0. The winners will host the Sacramento Gold, of the National Premier Soccer League, on May 18. The venue is yet to be determined, but could potentially be held at Santa Ana Stadium, Santa Ana College, or at UPSL fields like the Great Park in Irvine, the Lake Forest Sports Park, or elsewhere.

La Máquina was the only club of the three UPSL clubs to survive the first round of this Open Cup. L.A. Wolves went down early to Ventura County Fusion and were held to 1 goal leaving things at 2-1 for Ventura. San Nicolás FC of Pomona, CA fell to FC Tucson of the PDL by a score of 3-0.
